A group of seven accused members of Germany's left-wing extremist organization stand trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the network was behind targeting sites in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the identical event in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
